A Visual Guide to stuff in Shade City

Postby ShadowsMyst on Mon Feb 09, 2009 8:08 pm

For those who are not predisposed towards reading or imagining or even watching movies, here's some pictures to help get you in the right mindframe of what places and things look like. In particular I find most people don't 'get' what a megacity is like. So allow me to show you.

First up, what a mega city is like.

Some of these images are 'cleaner' than others, but it nicely illustrates the 'good parts' of town from the more sketchy ones. You may recognize these from other sources, but its the IDEA, don't take it literally. These are examples of what megacities are like.

Trams & Tram Stations

The trams of Shade City are a sort of "Skytrain" based off the transit system of the same name in use in Vancouver BC. The stations are based along the lines which are suspended in some cases on sky rails or large cement tracks. The trains are electric and controlled via computer, thus there is no human driving them.

The Trams in shade city are supplemented with buses and trolley cars that are all electric. In the Burbs of the city, cars are permitted, but in the Core areas, its park and ride only. Only company vehicles, commercial traffic and emergency vehicles are permitted on the narrow streets in the core. Otherwise, the space is reserved for pedistrian, bike, and transit traffic. There is virtually NO parking in the core save for emergency parking or delivery parking. Fortunately transit is very efficient and quite accessible. Many people travel through buildings which have moving walkways to help people walk faster to their destinations. Since people travel indoors a lot, many shops exist along the main sidewalks which can be quite large and crowded at peek travel times.

Advertisements are delivered via a combination of eye and ID scanning on various sidewalks, so generally speaking most people, traveling from place to place are constantly subjected with advertisements based on information profiles that have been garnered from their spending habits, personal tastes, and occupational skills. It is very difficult to travel through a building ( on a moving sidewalk) without being eye scanned at least every 50 meters and ID'ed at least twice through each building. Transit fares are automatically collected via the ID card. Those without cards cannot use the transit and will be arrested for not carrying ID. This is primarily only in the uppercity. In the Undercity, transit through buildings is generally prohibited.

The undercity has some trams that still run, but is primarily serviced by numerous taxi companies. There are also a lot of scooters and motorcycles, primary electric or bio-diesel. Some people do own cars, but its difficult to keep them save in the crime ridden areas. Those that do have cars, tend to be the 'upper crust' of those who dwell in the undercity and likely store them in a secured, enclosed parkade. Most people who do own cars do so for business reasons, using them as illegal taxies or courier vehicles.Much of the traffic in the undercity, as above is commercial, although most vehicles are armored and guarded as they transport between the docks and warehouses.
