how cybered up can a character be

Postby artguy50 on Sat Feb 04, 2012 9:48 pm

i been trying to think up a character for the RP and i dont know if I can do the whole "****ed up in an exploson" bit and has to have all Cybernetic/bioaugmentation, so Im wondering how augmented or cybered can one be and still look human and/or be on the Edge of feeling human and just being something less than human

Well logic says that as much as you can afford. If you cant afford it then you might have to be a corporations little bitch. Otherwise if its Ghost in the shell rules then all you need is your brain intact.

But Id wait until someone else comes in to give you a better answer.

well the character im thinking of doing is one of the sons to a big weapons and/or merc corporation but is not the whole "im rich as hell and u all can go suck it" kind of guy but has to deal with his other brothers who are and trying to find someway of feeling "normal" again before being focused into the family buzzs like his father and his father and his father's father's. that kind of deal

There are a few problems with cyberware and cyberaugmentation.

The technology, for the most part, really is still in its early stages. Cybernetic limbs and organs are possible, but often expensive. That's not even taking into account relatively frequent maintenance and tune-ups, which will likewise get expensive, especially as time goes on. Full-coversion cyborgs (a human brain in a completely artificial body) exist, but generally they are essentially treated as property of the military or large corporations, as they're the only ones who can afford the frequent, costly upkeep on the robotic frames.

Additionally, there are psychological issues. Generally, without loads of therapy (and sometimes even with) a person with cyberware will gradually start to feel disconnected from humanity in a condition called "cyberpsychosis." To be fair, there's even theories nowadays about transhumanism, with humanity essentially reaching its next stage of evolution through mechanical augmentation. That being the case, an increasingly-powerful cyborg who believes himself superior to baseline humanity can cause a whole lot of problems, and there have been cases of cyberpsychos going on rampages. A cyberpsychosis rampage, especially when carried out by a military-grade cyborg, generally ends with property damage in the realm of seven figures, multiple casualties, and the death of the cyborg.

Seriously, even with today's technology, when unstable people get their hands on serious hardware and are smart about it, they can do a crapton of damage. If you need examples of what a cyberpsycho rampage would be like in today's terms, you can go on Youtube and find videos of the guy who hijacked a tank from a military base in San Diego, or the guy who armor-plated a bulldozer and decided to take out the homes and businesses of the people in his town who pissed him off. Fast-forward the technology about fifty years, and the effect will wind up being the same.

Having been making a very cybered character for the past month. The answer to how cybered is not what most would consider 'full conversion' ala brain in a jar. The end result is still in the partial conversion category with the vast majority of your organs and bodily systems still intact. Sure some organs can get augmented, but there's still that soft squishy core in the center no matter how chromed up you are. So not Ghost in the Shell level. Either way it's a matter of how one can keep up with the payments and such.
