Cal Richards - The Cleric?

Postby Daggertooth on Tue Dec 18, 2012 9:16 pm

Here's my attempt at a character:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name: Cal Richards
Sex: M
Race: Human
Age: 29
Occupation: None
Physical Description: 5’8’’, Short clean cut brown hair, clean shaven. Rather unopposing, skinnier than average. No muscle tone, typical of someone who doesn’t work out. Somewhat pale complexion, caused by a lifetime indoors. He likes to be dressed in a fine suit and tie when out on business. Casually, he typically wears darker, blander colors to avoid standing out.

Mental Description: He’s quick thinking and logical with a distrust of authority figures and people in general. He stayed out of trouble in the undercity mostly by avoiding people and that habit has followed him throughout life. He’d rather avoid direct confrontations with people, but will be more than happy to tackle challenges, problems, and puzzles head on. He’s mostly apathetic to the plights of strangers. He's not anti-social, but it takes a bit of time for him to warm up to people.

Intelligence: 6
Mental Stability: 3
Strength: 3
Speed: 4
Agility: 4
Appearance: 3
Charisma: 3
Spiritual: 2
Taint: 3

Elemental affinity: Earth

Special Skills of note: A solid understanding of cybernetics and bioaugmentation. Cal is your go to guy for all your cybernetic needs. He can typically install most components, enhance basic components to perform beyond general factory settings, repair damaged devices (jimmy rigging and cannibalizing material as needed), and maintain optimal efficiency in existing hardware. He works best in a lab setting with the proper tools and the proper hardware, but he’s very resourceful and adaptable if he needs to be. In the field he’s mostly support, maintaining efficiency in bioware performance and quickly fixing or deactivating any malfunction.

This education and experience naturally transfers into the electronic and medical fields. He has a basic understanding of electronics, computers, software, sanitation, anesthesia, proper dressing and sutures, and basic surgical techniques. He's a generalist here.

Special Racial Abilities: opposable thumbs.

Talent: High dexterity in his fingers, allows for quick work in cybernetics, especially around small moving parts. Can do that weird finger wave thing that Dr Horrible can do.

Allergies/Banes :

Insanities: Slightly paranoid

Turn Ons: The latest in bioaugmentation and cybernetic technology, especially weapons.

Turn Offs: Hates the undercity.

Waking World Reputation: Disgraced biomedical Specialist. Blacklisted.

Veil Reputation: None

Veil Teacher: None

Personal Quote/motto: I do what I must because I can.

Favored Prey: Beef

Personal Style: He’s kind of stuck between a person who wants to dress finely and show the world how important he is, and still be the shy, slightly paranoid/scared, person who’s good at not being noticed.

Cybernetic/bioaugmentation:

2025 Dermotech, advanced A-prime neural processor (Special, High capacity edition)
  • Best neural processor money could buy...in 2025.
  • HUD vision feature: Strategically displays variables (up to 5) such as temperature or available creds. Additional variables can be downloaded/purchased. An interactive 2D, partial 3D, map can be accessed.
  • synchronizes with bio-augmentation.
  • Automatically Synchronizes data storage devices.
  • Proximity synchronization to car or house.
  • Advanced streaming for internet, social media, and entertainment.

Left Forearm Synthetic underlay: Designed to provide multi-bioware networking, interfacing ports, and power for a wide assortment of attachments.

Temple Interfacing Nodes: Hard port connectors, hidden behind skin flaps just behind both temples, designed to interface with an assortment of headgear.

Equipment carried:

Cybernetic Technician Visor- Can attach to the Temple interfacing Nodes. Provides vision in a variety of wavelengths beyond the visual spectrum, has a 200X zoom on objects within 3 feet, and can increase photosensitivity by up to 3 times. Typically used to follow different radiance levels of wires, resistors, and connections in complex bioelectric circuits.

CyberArm attachment: Clunky media module. 5in X 2in High Definition screen (with a slight crack in the bottom right) that covers the top portion of his arm and a mini-keyboard slightly on the inside of the arm.

Character History:
My life was almost the classic rags to riches story; I was so damn close. I was born and raised an Undercity Rat, poor and dirty. I never knew my mom. She ran off shortly after I was born, or she died in some gruesome way, or I suppose it could have been both. Dad rarely talked about her, but the story he told typically changed depending on how inebriated and bitter he was at the time. I think he liked thinking she was dead, probably daydreamed killing her himself. My guess is she got fed up and left the drunken abusive bastard. Why she left us to deal with him is anyone’s guess, but I hate her for it. As I grew older life became a cycle of school, running home to avoid the roaming gangs, then staying out of dad’s way or else risk his wrath. My older sister Kaylee had it worse. Dad was always verbally and physically abusive, but he was especially hard on her for being a girl. I think he resented her for that, as if it was her fault. After one particularly bad night, I think she was 16 or 17 at the time, she ran off. I guess she figured I didn’t need her protection anymore, or she just smartened up and set out to take care of herself. I never saw her again.

It was around the start of highschool that I started finding direction in life. I wasn’t really weak, but fear of the older boys, the undercity in general, and fear of my father always had me on edge. I wanted to be much more than I was, which was why I became interested in cybernetic and bio-augmentation. The dream was military grade hardware; both designing them and overseeing their implementation. It was hard to pursue that in my joke of a school. Outdated manuals and undertrained teachers did little more than introduce the concept to me. I thirsted for more, so I apprenticed at what passed as an undercity bio-augmentation facility. It was actually little more than a glorified tattoo parlor. Rodent and roach infested, permits two years expired, and surgical tools rusted through with customers just as unhygienic. I tinkered there, practiced on strays and the occasional drunk, and was even able to mix and match some of our inventory to enhance some of the low tech stuff I had to work with. After I got good I was even trusted with some of the back alley work, with implants that weren’t regulated and customers who “didn’t exist”. I learned a lot more than I probably should have there, but it didn’t take more than a few years before I knew all they could teach me. I needed more.

I wanted official higher education; High class stuff...the kind of stuff you only get in the Uppercity education system. I needed it if I wanted to get anywhere in cybernetics. I searched everywhere for a loan, but my background seemed to hold me back. That was when my big break came in the form of a man named Guile Santos. I thought he saw something in me no one else did, and he was willing to lend me enough money to prove my worth. I took as much as he would give, moved to uppercity, bought a house, a car, all the finer things in life that I'd been missing up to this point, and I got into a grad school program specializing in the bio-mechanical sciences. I flourished there, surpassing many of my peers and was even selected for a fast track graduation that was sponsored by a large firm with several lucrative military contracts. After two years at the firm I was given one of the most sophisticated labs in the world, allowed to work with some of the most brilliant minds in R&D, and was given access to some of the highest security clearance hardware available. Real cutting edge stuff. Yeah, life was good.

Then Guile Santos came calling. He wanted the amount in full, and made it clear that he could ruin my life if I failed to deliver. I was making good money, but not fast enough. I was in a no win situation where there was absolutely no way I could get him what I owed in the time that he wanted. At least legally. He did mention “alternative” payments, but at this point it was obvious I was set up. Why did he lend so much money, and why the sudden stone hearted unflinching demand for immediate payment in full? No, I didn't want to play his game. So I stole some highly classified plans and a prototype, dredged up some nobodies from my old shop days, and let it slip out that something "good" was on the market. Didn’t take long before I had arranged a buyer who was willing to pay the amount I owed and then some. I thought I was so careful, shadow deals, back ally drops…nothing to alert the authorities and nothing specific enough to link to me. It was just a one time criminal act that would save me, how was I suppose to know the firm was already under investigation for leaking information. Just before I went through with it I discovered my nobody was government, or co-opted by government. They suspected who I was, but I got wind of them just before they moved in on me. In my panic I destroyed the evidence, the plans, the prototype, and tried to pretend I wasn’t part of anything. It was too late. They didn’t have enough evidence to lock me away, but the company was more than willing to scapegoat me for all their problems, claim their leak was all me, and make an example out of me. I was quickly fired, publicly humiliated, and was blacklisted from the entire industry.

So here I am, jobless, disgraced, and severely in debt. I can’t afford my home or car and I barely have enough borrowed money to buy food for the next few weeks. Worse, I’ve dedicated my life to a career that I can no longer have, and I’ve nowhere left to go. I have no idea where to go from here. …So that’s my story. So close to the classical rags to riches story. So close to getting everything I’ve ever wanted. So close…

About the only thing I can say is that Elemental Affinity: Chrome is not one of them. You got earth, air, fire, water, light, and darkness.

Ah, so those are my options. Good to know. I suspected that chrome wasn't an option, but figured it'd be a fine enough place holder till later. I'm not sure exactly how an elemental affinity will play out with this particular character as its not something he'd be consciously aware of. I suppose he'd be Earth.

Elemental affinity for the mundane tends to manifest only as a general personality/demeanor. For example you can make generalizations such as:
Fire = very passionate people
Earth = more stoic
Darkness= secretive
Light= open and sharing
Air= flighty
Water= mercurial, changing

Off-topic, but it's nearly two in the morning, and I can't resist:

Earth!
Fire!
Wind!
Water!
Heart!
GO PLANET!

I mean, come on. Gaia is in Shifters, too...she just probably doesn't give incredibly powerful magical rings to a bunch of teenagers and tell them to go become eco-terrorists with the ability to summon Silver Surfer's hippie younger brother.

That being said, alternate descriptions for elemental affinities:

Fire: passionate, "hot-headed." Extroverted, ready for action at any time
Earth: Steady, stoic. Tend towards being methodical and following tradition.
Water: Mercurial really is the best way to put it. Changeable personalities, like to find unconventional and interesting new ways to solve problems.
Air: Flighty, "head in the clouds," perhaps intellectual, definitely tend towards the "social butterfly," excitable.
Darkness: Private, introverted. They keep their own counsel, and know the value of secrets.
Light: Extroverted, sharing, open. Pretty much the exact opposite of Darkness.
Until shade is gone, until water is dust, into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath to spit in Sightblinder's eye on the last day.

Eco-terrorists? Are you saying that this innocent cartoon had a sinister agenda behind it? Ironically, I think my field of work would make me into one of the villains. "I'm gonna chain these trees down, then burn it so only grass will grow...bwah ha ha ha ha!!!"

Hmmm...but no heart though. Does life or the biosphere play any role in elemental affinities, or is that simply a symptom of the appropriate subset of existing affinities (proper soil, moisture, wind, fire rotation, etc).

So Earth. He's pliable under pressure, a bit brittle in some situations, but underlying his persona is a foundation of stubbornness. Quite Metamorphic...

I made some slight changes.

Under Special Skills I added medical knowledge; sanitation, proper dressing and sutures, and surgical techniques. I figure that if he knows how to install bio-augmentation stuff he'd be able to properly cut someone up and sew them shut....from a medical perspective.

Cyber Augmentation. I added an Underlay on the left arm. The underlay is supposed to be compatible to a wide assortment of attachments, be a central hub for networking all other installed bioware, and have ports for external connections... but without an attachment it is kind of useless.

Temple nodes. Similar idea to the underlay in that it allows communication with other devices and can have a wide assortment of attachments, but by itself is kind of useless.

I felt the eyeball thing might be a bit much, so I changed that into a visor designed to attach to the temple nodes.

I'll probably try to add more "trinket" style bioware...or add some scarring from removed bioware in the physical description. I envision that in his younger shop days he probably installed some of the merchandise on himself. Kind of like tattoo artists have a lot of tattoos to show off. As he matured into the field he probably recognized his bioware as junk and had them removed, then moved on to more practical things, like the underlay, that can be compatible with high tech attachments.

Please tell me if I'm out of line with any of this. I love the concept, but am a little nervous on how far I can push the bioaugmentation stuff. Also, are there any books or shows anyone can recommend that has this world's level of technology. I already know that ghost in the shell is a bit beyond this world.

You're doing fine with the cyber ware far as I'm concerned. Only thing to know is that with a neural processor (the thing necessary for brain signals to interact with machines ala computers, etc.) can only be installed once and can't be upgraded if I recall correctly. Similarly the more basic your processor the less it can do. A good one can interact with various systems (vehicles, computers, guns), but only a limited number of those systems. Similarly your processor also includes any sort of reflex booster.

Basically the underarm just seems to be a port, much like the temple ones. It would connect to the central processor,but is nothing more than an external connector essentially. Plug something in and his brain can access it.

Similarly the temple ones act the same way as well as acting as hardpoint connections to hold the visor in place.

Frankly most of the cyberware we use and reference is based on the rpg CP2020. As far as I can see unless I misread something your cyberware is pretty much in tone with what you can get.

This is good to know.

How important is the neural processor...as in, is it 100% necessary for any bioaugmentation or is it something that is highly recommended but a person could live without it and still have solid bioaubmentations. If the latter is the case, is there a threashold of increasing bioaugmentations where a neural processor becomes required?

What is the highest end neural processor on the civilian market? I'm thinking that Cal might have had access to some high end military grade stuff when he had security clearance, but would already have had a neural processor installed by then since he wouldn't have had the patience to wait that long in life. If he bought a neural processor it would have been shortly after Santos lent all the money. When Cal stupidly just took all the money he could borrow to buy a house, car, other luxuries and to pay for grad school. So he would have tried to buy the best of the best of the best in neural processing....at least the best back 9 years ago or so.

A neural processor is necessary when you want to interact with machines in specialized manners with your brain. Want to hack with the mind? Access those files with a thought? Control your car with nerve impulses? Pilot that linear frame? Know exactly where your gun is pointing from the hip? Those are tasks reliant upon a neural processor acting as middle man between you and the device.

Various vision modes in cybereyes don't require it, or other various other sensor enhancers. Your cyberlimbs don't need it, even if they pop out razors or guns.

As for how much can a commercially available model do? I'm unsure, but since what your sheet has is pretty much data/terminal interface that's not actually much more than what you'd need out of a very basic model in theory. The difference is potentially in the number of connections, etc.

In truth if he got it after his money scheme he might have gone for the more subdued look. So the interface 'jacks' are actually barely visible contact points on his arm. His temple ports are concealed behind a dermal flap. Really beyond that you're talking number of connectable devices and types.

Either way SM made a post on it once, but I'm believing it was in a previous forum so I think we might have to ask her for specifics.
